Zipcar Offers Boston Customers ‘ONE>WAY’ Trips

Zipcar's ONE>WAY service, which is still in testing, allows customers to take a car on a "point-to-point" trip without returning it to its original pickup location. Zipcar

Zipcar is spreading the holiday cheer to Boston customers by helping them find a parking spot at their end destination.

Unlike Zipcar’s traditional round-trip service, the ONE>WAY service allows members to take “point-to-point’’ trips around Greater Boston with a guaranteed Zipcar parking spot, known as a “pod.’’ Once a customer is done with the car, they can park it in a nearby Boston-area location instead of driving the car back it to its original parking spot.

The company hopes the program – which is still in beta testing only in Boston – will appeal to customers who might want to use a car for a short trip around town without having to worry about returning the car to its pick-up location.

According to data provided from Zipcar, there are over 200 Zipcar ONE>WAY locations in Boston metro area. This includes surrounding communities such as Somerville, Quincy, Arlington, and Watertown.

In a press release, Zipcar said it began its ONE>WAY testing on select members in May. The company believes expanding the program to include to more members “will help Zipcar further refine the member experience, including locations, usage patterns, features, and pricing.’’

Zipcar announced 200 Honda Fit vehicles will be available for the ONE>WAY service at its various Boston-based pods. These vehicles will be branded exclusively for one-way use to distinguish them from Zipcar’s round-trip fleet.
