Help Me Pick a Headlamp Cleaner

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. I have a 2005 Prius. The problem is that the plastic covering the headlamps has deteriorated. It is clear that the light coming from them is really diminished. I tried the department store headlamp cleaner (don’t know what brand) which lasts about a week. An Internet search yielded another brand which has lots of ‘scientific’ backing for its product. Local car shops will polish them for over $100. What do you recommend?

A. I have had good luck with the headlight cleaner called Quixx. It uses a polish and sandpaper to clean the lenses then a sealer to prevent further deterioration. The other product that I have tried is the Meguiar’s Headlight restoration kit. This kit includes a buffing wheel to polish the lenses.

Q. A friend of mine relayed a story that a motorist was apparently upset when he decided to use his windshield washer while driving on the highway. Is that actually against some kind of rules or regulations?

A. I can’t think of any rule that would prohibit a clean windshield and better visibility. Perhaps the other driver was getting sprayed with washer fluid, and if that is the case they were in my opinion following too closely.
