How Do I Get Rid of Rust?

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. I have some rust on the door of my car from an old scratch that has slowly been spreading. In this case I would rather try to fix it myself rather than pay a body shop. I have some touch up paint, but did not know how to effectively get rid of the rust before painting this spot. Can you offer some suggestions?

A. Just like any type of painting, to get good results it is all about the surface preparation. You will need to sand/prime/fill the affected area before painting. Once the rusted area looks good then you can apply the paint and depending on the car then apply a clear top-coast. Skipping any step will result is a less than perfect finish.
