Should a Vehicle Be Left Outdoors?

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. My mechanic is of the opinion that it is better for a vehicle to be left out than garaged. He seems to think that vehicles do not “dry out’’ after heavy rain or snow when garaged. What is your opinion?

A. To some extent your mechanic is correct, but, in my opinion, only to a point. If the garage were completely air tight, the car would remain damp, which could possibly cause rust or corrosion. If your car is wet or snow covered, it will dry, providing there is some ventilation in the garage. If the garage has windows or vents, be sure they are open, even just a bit. That will allow the air to circulate and the car to dry out.
