What’s Wrong With My Truck’s Shifter?

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. I have a Dodge truck that from time to time I can’t get the shifter from park to drive. Sometimes it works fine other times I need to turn the key on and off and step on the brake several times. What do you think could be wrong?

A. The shift interlock system is engaged whenever the ignition switch is in the lock or accessory position. An additional feature will prevent shifting out of the park position unless the brake pedal is depressed approximately one-half an inch. The problem could be with the brake switch, solenoid or even a wiring issue.
