Questions About a Mazda Miata

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. I recently purchased a Mazda Miata with a six-speed transmission and a retractable hardtop. This is my only car and I plan to drive it year round and I have a couple of questions. I have heard that you shouldn’t use the parking brake in the winter. And what about snow tires, two or four?

A. In general if the weather is below freezing and wet try to avoid using the parking brake. The parking brake cables can become coated with slush and freeze and you will be stuck. In this case you would be better leaving the car in first or reverse gears. Regarding snow tires; using four is the best option you will not just get better traction to get moving but also to stop. I drove a Miata during a winter storm and it did remarkably well with it biggest limitation being the lack of ground clearance.
