Where’s the Gas Cap?

John Paul, aka “the Car Doctor,’’ answers readers’ car-related questions.

Q. I borrowed a 2013 Ford Focus from a neighbor and when I went to put gas in it, I was surprised there was no gas cap. What is up with that? Also, the little flap that is in the filler tube doesn’t open when you push on it, how would you put gas in if you run out?

A. Ford calls this a cap-less fuel system and the design has a built in system that prevents fumes from escaping. Included with the car is a special fuel that releases the flap and allows you to add fuel with a gas can.
