Two people are ‘lucky to be alive’ after hitting moose on N.H. highway in a Mini Cooper
Two people who struck a moose on Interstate 93 in New Hampshire Saturday night are “lucky to be alive,’’ fire officials said.
The driver and a passenger were heading north in Campton shortly before 11 p.m. when their two-door Mini Cooper hit the moose as it crossed Interstate 93 and slid off the roadway into some trees, trapping the passenger, fire officials said in a Sunday statement.
“Fortunately bystanders were quick to take action, likely saving a life,’’ the statement said.
The bystanders lifted the roof of the heavily damaged car and extricated the passenger, according to fire officials. The driver was able to get out without help.
The passenger suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and the driver suffered minor injuries. Both were taken to Speare Memorial Hospital in Plymouth, N.H., officials said.
“The moose was killed during that accident’’ said a New Hampshire State Police spokeswoman.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
