After putting two dozen vehicles through a series of family-oriented activities, car research firm Kelley Blue Book announced 16 vehicles earned the company’s Best Family Cars award.

KBB editors put the vehicles through a series of tests and evaluations over a two-week period. The tests focused on safety, comfort, convenience, and the space offered to passengers and cargo.

A total of 24 vehicles were eligible contenders. After testing concluded, the winners included three minivans, six sedans, three two-row crossover SUVs and four three-row SUVs.

This year KBB also looked carefully at how each vehicle accommodates three types of child safety seats. The seats include a rear-facing infant seat, a convertible seat that can be installed in a rear-facing or forward-facing direction and a forward-facing booster seat.

KBB’s executive editorial director and executive market analyst Jack Nerad(CK) said the company’s editors lived with the vehicle for two-week periods and used them in several family-oriented activities. This included packing each vehicle with cargo, watching movies from the back seats, installing child safety seats and more.

“In short, we did everything that you and your family might do with a vehicle day-to-day,’’ said Nerad in a statement. “And we did all this with a certain sense of what a family needs and wants, since many of our testers are simultaneously parents of kids ranging from mid-twenties to newborn.’’

Nerad went on to say KBB’s testing was not “just a cursory exercise.’’ Instead it relied strongly upon many real family’s experiences and desires.
