I-90 will be reduced to 2 lanes all weekend
Planning to travel on the Massachusetts Turnpike this weekend?
If so, you may want to consider alternate routes. Or at least be prepared for heavy traffic.
The state Department of Transportation announced that the Mass Pike, also known as I-90, will be reduced to two lanes this weekend, MassLive reports. The reduction, which will start at 11:59 p.m. on Friday and last until 5 a.m. on Monday, is part of a ‘dry run’ in preparation for the Commonwealth Avenue bridge replacement planned for this summer.
The on-ramp from Cambridge Street to I-90 eastbound and the I-90 westbound ‘u-turn’ to I-90 eastbound in Allston-Brighton will be closed off all weekend, according to MassLive. On Sunday, the off-ramp at exit 20 westbound will be closed and replaced by a detour through exit 16 in West Newton.
Transportation officials are encouraging drivers to avoid any travel on I-90 if possible and consider taking public transportation, such as the Worcester/Framingham line on the commuter rail, as an alternative.
The Commonwealth Avenue bridge replacement project is scheduled to run from July 28 through Aug. 7. It’s expected to affect service on the Worcester/Framingham commuter rail line as well as some Amtrak service.
