Why do my brakes squeak in reverse?

Squealing brakes
Q. I purchased a new 2016 Mercedes GLC, and after 3,000 miles, the brakes started to squeal. The dealer replaced the brake pads, and it was OK for about seven months, but they started to squeal again, mostly in reverse. The dealer replaced all four brakes again, and now they’re squeaking again. The dealer told me it’s safe and that Mercedes is working on a solution. After spending all this money on the car and still having the same problem, I think Mercedes should replace my car or give me a lifetime warranty on the brakes. What do you think?

A. Mercedes has at least three technical service bulletins regarding this issue. In all the bulletins, Mercedes addresses the issue as a problem and not just an annoyance. The typical description is a noise mostly on the first brake application and in reverse. The repair is a replacement of the brake pads. At this point, I would continue to work with the dealership until the issue is solved to your satisfaction. Your question regarding Mercedes replacing the car or giving you a lifetime warranty on the brakes — in both cases, I think that is very unlikely.
