Crews ripped up trolley tracks on the Commonwealth Avenue bridge Friday night, reducing a stretch of the Massachusetts Turnpike, which the bridge spans, to two lanes in both eastbound and westbound directions.

There were detours in the area of Fenway Park, Jacquelyn Goddard , a spokeswoman with the state’s Department of Transportation, said, but motorists could still gain access to the Pike, Storrow Drive, and Beacon Street after the Red Sox game ended Friday night.

The long-planned bridge project is expected to continue to disrupt travel for thousands over the weekend.

Buses continue to replace B line service for stops near the bridge, and the Boston University bridge remains closed to non-emergency vehicles. The bus shuttles and that bridge closure will remain until Aug. 14.

By 9 a.m. Saturday, the Pike will be reduced to one eastbound lane in the area of the Commonwealth Avenue bridge. Two lanes will remain open Saturday for westbound traffic on that stretch of the highway.

“People should avoid using the Mass. Pike if possible over the weekend,’’ said Goddard.

Addtionally, because of the Commonwealth Avenue bridge project, the MBTA commuter rail will not stop at Yawkey Way station on Saturday. Instead, riders will have to be shuttled via buses from Boston Landing, said Goddard.

Those attending Saturday’s Red Sox game, scheduled for 7:10 p.m., will be shuttled to Yawkey Way station, while everyone else will be shuttled to the Reservoir stop on the Green Line, she said.

Goddard expected construction crews to begin to remove parts of the deck of the bridge on the inbound side Friday night into Saturday.

This summer, crews are replacing the inbound lanes on the Commonwealth Avenue bridge. Next summer, the outbound lanes will be replaced. The inbound lanes of the bridge are completely closed to traffic, while the outbound lanes are open to buses, pedestrians, and cyclists.
